Harness My Child, Really?

Harness My Child, Really?

When we first moved to Scotland in 1985, I became very angry and confused when I saw how some adults were treating their toddlers.  Parents were “walking” their children on leashes!  I would never have guessed that sane adults would put a harness on their own children and go out into public as if it were normal.  And then…I became a parent.  I never did that with Jessica, as she was an easy child, but I would’ve if I’d thought it helpful.  It is a brilliant invention!  It benefits the parent and the child, and gives greater freedom for both.  The parent can have both hands free to pick up and carry necessary items.  The child can move independently and get some exercise.  The parent knows that the child can’t wander off or be grabbed by a stranger.  The child has security in knowing the parent is close by.  Win, win, win, win.  It’s amazing!

Adults on Leashes

So, do you see where I’m going with this analogy?  As a child of God, I need a harness.  I desire some freedom in this life, but know that I can’t wander off safely.  I need the protection and provision of my Heavenly Father, and I desire the closeness of His presence.  He, of course, doesn’t need a harness to keep track of me, but knows it’s in my best interest to keep me “attached.”  May I go so far as to suggest that the Holy Spirit is my harness?  (Don’t shoot me for that comparison, please.)

Just as a child would struggle against his/her “leash” when first used, we struggle against the so-called “restrictions” we face as the Spirit takes control in our lives.  He knows what is best and guides us as He pleases.  We balk at times, but we can learn to be grateful that He cares so much.

Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

(Frances J. Crosby, 1875)
